About Aussies

The Australian Shepherd is super smart, versatile, adaptable and energetic breed. Aussies were breed to use their brain and make decisions. Aussies want to be a part of everything that is going on and need an active lifestyle to be happy. Expect to spend plenty of time training your Aussie so he can learn things to do that will keep him occupied. Aussies tend to be wary of strangers and need plenty of early and frequent socialization.

Originally Australian Shepherds were used for herding and guardian dogs. Many today are still used for the same purpose. The Australian Shepherd is smart, focused and needs plenty of exercise and mental stimulation, otherwise they may end up finding something to do that their owner doesn’t approve of. Some things to keep your Australian exercised and mentally stimulated include dog sports (agility, fly ball, flying disc, herding trials, tracking), obedience training, and teaching him to do chores around your home. Australian Shepherds excel in the show ring, trial arena, obedience ring, agility and fly ball because of their high spirits and eagerness to please (makes them easy to train). Australian Shepherds herd livestock by nipping at the animals’ heels. If they don’t have a herding job this behavior may be transferred to children, other pets and vehicles. Always correct and redirect their herding behaviors by giving your Aussie demanding and interesting tasks or games that will provide him with the exercise and mental stimulation he needs. Australian Shepherds don’t need a big backyard and can adapt to any environment as long as he is given the exercise and mental stimulation he needs. If you are ready to provide leadership to your dog, train him consistently and fairly, and give him plenty of exercise and an outlet for his intelligence, then the Australian Shepherd can be right for you.

Australian Shepherd Size Variations:

There is a huge size variation in height, weight, bone structure, stockiness and overall build between toy, miniature and standard Aussies. Make sure you have taken into consideration what size dog you are really wanting, we only breed miniature and standard sized Aussies. We try our best to produce puppies within the miniature size range. We do our best to give you an estimate on what size a puppy will be by taking into consideration the parents, grandparents etc. (lineage, bone structure and build). However, remember we are downsizing a standard breed and sometimes we can get surprised by a puppy getting larger or smaller than expected. RedTree Ridge Aussies does not guarantee the size on any puppy. We can just do an informed, educated estimation at best.

Informational Size Chart:

Toys: 10-14" Tall, 7-20 Lbs.

Minis: 14-18" Tall, 15-40 Lbs.

Standards: 18-23" Tall, 40-65 Lbs.

*LBS. can vary independently of size, depends on bone structure/build

Australian Shepherds come in many different color combinations. Aussies have two basic body colors (black and red), one pattern (merle), and two trim colors (tan and white). Aussies can have brown, amber, or blue eyes with or without flecks and marbling (and each eye can be a different color(s) than the other).
